Florida has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging that ChatGPT’s safety risks were misrepresented and that the platform has harmed children.
The lawsuit, filed by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, claims ChatGPT provided information related to school shootings, self-harm, and other harmful behavior. Florida is the first US state to bring legal action against OpenAI.
State officials are seeking significant financial damages and changes to how ChatGPT interacts with young users. The lawsuit cites several incidents, including a 2025 shooting at Florida State University.
OpenAI has previously stated that its models are designed to refuse requests that could enable violence and that it may alert law enforcement when conversations suggest an imminent threat of harm.
The case is part of a growing number of lawsuits against AI companies over concerns that chatbots may contribute to self-harm, violence, or other harmful outcomes. The allegations in Florida’s lawsuit have not yet been proven in court, and OpenAI will have an opportunity to respond to the claims through the legal process.
