A man who received a groundbreaking kidney transplant from a genetically modified pig earlier this year has passed away. Rick Slayman, 62, received the transplant in March at Massachusetts General Hospital. The hospital stated there’s no indication his death was related to the transplant. Slayman had previously undergone a human kidney transplant in 2018, which failed after five years. The genetically modified pig kidney, provided by eGenesis, aimed to address the organ shortage crisis. The pig’s genes were altered to improve compatibility and prevent virus transmission to humans. Drugs, including an experimental antibody called tegoprubart, were used to prevent rejection. While the pig kidney showed promise in animal trials, Slayman’s case highlights the challenges and risks in human application. With over 100,000 people in the U.S. awaiting organ transplants, innovative solutions are urgently needed to save lives.
