The Olympic motto is “Faster, Higher, Stronger, Together,” and for Paris 2024, “greener” can be added. Organizers aim to host the greenest-ever Olympics, with the Olympic Village powered by renewable energy, a focus on vegetarian food, recycling, and no single-use plastic.
The buildings for the Olympics have eco-ambitions. The Adidas Arena in northern Paris, hosting badminton and gymnastics, is made from low-carbon concrete and 80% of it is covered with greenery. The Aquatics Center, the only permanent new arena, uses wood and recycled materials, and its water is warmed by heat captured from a nearby data center.
The apartments for athletes will be converted into local housing post-Games. No air-conditioning units will be installed to keep electricity use down. The organizers aim to limit Olympic emissions to 1.75 million tonnes of CO2, half that of previous Games.
Legacy goals include building public pools on the River Seine and converting areas around Olympic venues into new neighborhoods, ensuring the Games are remembered for their sustainability achievements.
