European Council President Charles Michel has announced his decision to run for the European Parliament (MEP) in the June elections, leading to his early departure from the council presidency in July. Reflecting on his four-year term, Michel expressed a responsibility to give an account of his work and propose a project for Europe’s future. Although his current mandate concludes in November, the European Parliament elections are scheduled for June. Michel is expected to lead the list of the liberal Reformist Movement party in these elections, and if elected, he will continue his work as European Council president until being sworn in as an MEP on July 16. Michel has been the president of the European Council since late 2019, having previously served as the prime minister of Belgium.
