European Union (EU) regulators are seeking to question Apple regarding allegations that the tech giant blocked video game company Epic Games from establishing its own app store, potentially violating the newly implemented digital rules in the 27-nation bloc. This development further intensifies the ongoing dispute between the two companies, with Epic Games, known for the popular game Fortnite, accusing Apple of hindering its efforts to create an iOS app marketplace that would compete with the App Store. The EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), aimed at preventing large tech firms from monopolizing digital markets, has compelled Apple to permit European users to download iPhone apps from alternative stores. The European Commission, the EU’s primary antitrust authority, has requested additional information from Apple under the DMA, and violations of these rules could result in significant penalties for the tech company.
