The European Union has begun implementing the Entry/Exit System (EES), a new biometric border check for all non-EU citizens, including British visitors, entering the bloc for short stays. The EES, which will apply in all EU countries except Cyprus and Ireland, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, requires travelers to provide their passport number, fingerprints, and a facial photo at automated kiosks. This digital system replaces manual passport stamping to modernize border management, combat identity fraud, and monitor the 90-day stay limit within a 180-day period. First-time visitors will register their biometrics, while subsequent journeys will primarily use facial verification. Implementation will be gradual, with full roll-out by April 10, 2026, though the UK has advised travelers to allow extra time for potential delays. The EES is a precursor to the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which will require non-Schengen citizens to apply for a paid electronic permit starting in late 2026.
