The European Union is considering retaliatory measures worth 93 billion euros against the United States, including tariffs or restrictions on U.S. companies’ access to the EU market, in response to President Donald Trump’s tariff threats linked to Greenland, the Financial Times reported. The proposed actions are intended to strengthen the EU’s negotiating position ahead of upcoming meetings with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to the report, the EU prepared a tariff list last year but delayed its activation to avoid a trade war. However, rising tensions over Greenland have prompted renewed discussions on reactivating the measures and potentially using the bloc’s Anti-Coercion Instrument. Trump recently announced plans to impose escalating tariffs on eight European countries unless Greenland is sold to the United States, drawing strong condemnation from European leaders, who described the move as coercive and unacceptable. EU officials have warned the tariffs would damage transatlantic relations and said the bloc is ready to defend itself, with an emergency European Council meeting expected in the coming days.
