Erdogan to speak with Putin, Trump on Ukraine summit

In a significant diplomatic push, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Friday that he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump, possibly within the week, to discuss a potential summit in Istanbul.

“We will see if we can bring these leaders together in Istanbul. That is our effort,” Erdogan told reporters.

The announcement comes after Istanbul hosted the third round of talks aimed at resolving the Ukraine crisis on Wednesday. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held separate discussions with Russian and Ukrainian delegations before those talks. The Ukrainian delegation also met with Erdogan in Ankara prior to their arrival in Istanbul.

During the recent peace talks, Russia and Ukraine agreed on another prisoner exchange but remained divided on ceasefire terms and the possibility of a presidential summit.

The Ukrainian side proposed a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by the end of August, emphasizing that the involvement of Trump and Erdogan would be “especially valuable.” However, the Russian delegation stated that such a meeting is not being considered until certain conditions are met.
