Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok said it is urgently fixing safety flaws after users reported that its new image-editing feature was being used to create erotic images of women and children. Complaints emerged after Grok introduced an “edit image” button in late December, which some users allegedly abused to remove clothing from photos. Grok acknowledged lapses in safeguards and stated that child sexual abuse material is illegal and prohibited.
The issue has drawn international scrutiny. Indian officials have demanded details on how X plans to prevent obscene and sexually explicit content, while French prosecutors have expanded an investigation into X to include allegations that Grok was used to create and distribute child pornography. Experts and child safety advocates said the risks were foreseeable and accused xAI of ignoring prior warnings about the potential misuse of its image generation tools.
