Shinjiro Koizumi, the election chief of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, following the party’s poor performance in the recent general election. The LDP, along with its coalition partner Komeito, won only 215 of 465 seats in the lower house of parliament, falling short of a majority. The LDP’s seat count dropped from 247 to 191. Komeito leader Keiichi Ishii also suggested he may resign after the disappointing election results.
