Ecuador’s army and police conducted joint operations to regain control of prisons following riots and hostage-taking incidents. Approximately 800 military and police officers reclaimed control of a prison in Machala, El Oro province, while another operation secured the Turi prison in Azuay province. In Esmeraldas, 1,100 personnel confiscated explosives and prohibited items. The unrest began on January 8 after a drug lord escaped. President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day state of emergency and an “internal armed conflict” against organized crime groups. Security forces have conducted over 10,000 operations, resulting in numerous arrests, including 125 labeled as “terrorists.”
