Ebola threat puts South Sudan’s lifesaving trauma care on alert

South Sudan has not reported any Ebola cases, but an outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo is raising concerns about the virus crossing the border. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is strengthening preparations because an outbreak could disrupt its ability to treat people wounded in the country’s conflicts.

 

The ICRC has increased Ebola screening, handwashing facilities, staff training and isolation capacity at Juba Military Hospital. During the first half of 2026, the hospital’s surgeries increased by nearly 30% from the same period last year, while the ICRC evacuated 266 wounded patients from conflict areas.

 

The ICRC has created a phas   ed response plan, ranging from increased preparedness when Ebola is only in neighboring countries to stronger restrictions if cases appear in South Sudan or at the hospital. Officials warn that Ebola could make patient transfers more difficult or even temporarily force the suspension of some emergency surgical services, especially in areas already affected by insecurity and poor transportation.
