The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has continued to worsen, with confirmed cases rising to 598 and the death toll reaching 115, health authorities said Tuesday. The latest figures include 48 new cases and 14 additional deaths reported on Monday, while 22 patients have recovered since the outbreak began.
Officials warned that sustained community transmission and the risk of geographic spread remain major concerns. Nearly 300 people were still in isolation or receiving treatment, including confirmed and suspected cases. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, was officially declared on May 15.
Response efforts have also been complicated by insecurity in Ituri Province, the outbreak’s epicenter, where armed group activity has limited access to some affected areas. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said many health facilities lack essential resources such as clean water, protective equipment and decontamination supplies, posing further challenges to containing the disease.
