Earthquake kills over 800, injures at least 2,800 in Afghanistan

A powerful magnitude-6 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan around midnight, killing at least 812 people and injuring over 2,800, mainly in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. Rescue efforts have been hampered by rough mountainous terrain, collapsed mudbrick homes, heavy rain, and landslide risks. Military teams have evacuated hundreds of wounded and dead by helicopter.

Three villages in Kunar were completely destroyed, leaving survivors trapped under rubble and in urgent need of medical aid and supplies. Authorities and humanitarian agencies are calling for international assistance, as Afghanistan’s interim government struggles amid declining foreign aid and other crises. The quake’s casualties could rise as teams reach more isolated areas.
