President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) condemned the international community’s “silence and inaction” as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels advanced in eastern DRC. He assured that the Congolese army is responding “vigorously” despite the group’s continued capture of territory, including parts of Goma. The fighting has worsened the humanitarian crisis, displacing 500,000 people.
Tshisekedi skipped crisis talks with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, while regional leaders urged direct negotiations. The UN and major powers have called on Rwanda to withdraw troops, but Rwanda denies involvement. The situation remains tense as M23 forces maintain their offensive.
