DR Congo Ebola deaths top 300 as control measures tightened

The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 300, with 1,155 confirmed cases and 304 deaths reported. Health officials have also confirmed that a French doctor who helped respond to the outbreak in the hardest-hit Ituri province has contracted the virus.

To curb the spread, the DRC has introduced stricter travel measures, including a 21-day health monitoring period and travel restrictions for people returning from affected areas. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has suspended travel to and from the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan as a precaution. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is also calling for the urgent release of pledged funding, warning that a total of $1.4 billion is needed to support both the humanitarian and public health response.
