Donald Trump joins TikTok, rapidly wins 3 million followers

In a surprising move, Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump joined TikTok, amassing 3 million followers within roughly a day. Trump’s launch video, posted on June 1, showed him at an Ultimate Fighting Championship event in Newark, New Jersey, and garnered over 56 million views. He emphasized using every tool to communicate directly with Americans.

Trump’s decision to join TikTok, despite having attempted to ban it as president over national security concerns, aims to connect with younger voters for his third presidential campaign against Democratic incumbent Joe Biden. Biden’s campaign is already active on TikTok with over 340,000 followers, despite Biden having supported a potential ban if TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance does not divest.

Trump maintains a strong social media presence with 87 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) and over 7 million on his platform, Truth Social. Although Trump has called TikTok a national security threat, he acknowledged that banning it would inadvertently benefit Facebook, which he criticized as dishonest.
