Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is facing strong domestic and international backlash after making controversial comments about China’s Taiwan region. The remarks, viewed as provocative and as interference in China’s internal affairs, triggered large protests in Tokyo, where demonstrators demanded that she retract her statements or step down. Protesters accused Takaichi of reviving pre-war militaristic thinking and pushing Japan toward conflict.
International experts from several countries also criticized her comments, warning that Japan is undermining regional stability, violating long-standing diplomatic commitments, and ignoring historical lessons. They reaffirmed support for the one-China principle and cautioned that Japan’s increasingly assertive military posture sends dangerous signals. Many urged Takaichi to withdraw her remarks and called on Japan to return to a more stable, dialogue-based foreign policy.
