Tropical Storm Hilary caused rare flooding in the Southwestern U.S. desert, prompting urgent cleanup efforts. This marked the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years. Although weakened, the storm brought flood warnings to multiple states, with a particular risk in southeastern Oregon and Idaho due to thunderstorms and heavy showers. Hilary also led to a boil-water order for 400 houses near Mount Charleston, west of Las Vegas, and caused flooding in Nevada. While Hilary initially hit Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula as a hurricane, it triggered unusual rain in arid U.S. regions. Death Valley National Park closed due to the storm, displacing around 400 people.
