Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Thursday that Denmark and Greenland are open to talks on Arctic security, as long as Denmark’s territorial integrity is respected. Her comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would not use force over Greenland and suggested progress toward a deal with NATO allies.
Frederiksen said Arctic security is a matter for all of NATO but stressed that decisions affecting Denmark and Greenland must respect their sovereignty. Greenlandic lawmaker Aaja Chemnitz added that no agreements can be made without Greenland’s direct involvement.
The U.S. maintains a limited military presence in Greenland under a long-standing agreement, while Greenland has broad autonomy and the right to seek independence through a referendum.
