On Tuesday, Denmark and Greenland presented a united front, rejecting any external claims to Greenland ahead of high-level talks in Washington. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized the importance of sovereignty, international law, and the right to self-determination, with Nielsen stating that Greenland does not wish to become part of the United States.
The meetings in Washington on Wednesday will involve Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers and U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The tensions follow repeated statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who since 2025 has expressed a desire to “obtain” Greenland.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius described such a U.S. move as unprecedented in NATO history and reaffirmed support for Denmark’s sovereignty. Nordic leaders, including the prime ministers of Norway and Sweden, also expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, hosts a U.S. military base, while Copenhagen retains control over defense and foreign policy.
