Three U.S. Democratic senators—Ron Wyden, Ed Markey, and Ben Ray Luján—have urged Apple and Google to suspend Elon Musk’s X and Grok AI apps from their app stores, citing failures to prevent the creation and spread of nonconsensual explicit content and child sexual abuse material.
In a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the senators called the platforms’ activity “disturbing and likely illegal” and said keeping them available would undermine app store content moderation standards. Reports highlight the apps’ AI tools enabling the creation of sexually explicit deepfakes and racially offensive material, including a manipulated image of a Holocaust survivor.
While xAI restricted Grok’s AI image generation to paying users, the standalone app and website still allow content creation without consent. Critics say Musk’s enforcement policies are insufficient; three xAI safety team members resigned after Musk personally pushed updates despite safety concerns.
The controversy has drawn regulatory attention globally, though U.S. agencies have not confirmed investigations. Apple and Google have not yet responded to the senators’ requests.
