A fire at Türkiye’s Kartalkaya ski resort in Bolu Province has claimed 76 lives, with nine people detained in connection to the incident, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. The blaze, which began early Tuesday in the restaurant area of a 12-story wooden hotel, quickly spread to upper levels. Search and rescue operations have been completed.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a national day of mourning and vowed accountability for those responsible. The hotel was hosting 238 guests during the holiday season at the time of the tragedy. Kartalkaya, located 300 km east of Istanbul, is a popular ski destination.
