Severe flooding across Central Europe, caused by days of heavy rains, has led to rising death tolls and mass evacuations. Romania has reported six deaths, while Austria and Poland have each recorded one. Four people are missing in the Czech Republic. Hard-hit nations include Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania, with Slovakia and Hungary potentially next in line for flooding.
In the Czech Republic, thousands have been evacuated, especially in Opava and other northeastern areas. Prime Minister Petr Fiala warned that the worst may still be ahead, while President Petr Pavel noted improvements in crisis management since previous floods.
Austria declared Lower Austria a disaster zone after a firefighter died, and evacuations are ongoing. Romania and Poland also faced deadly floods, with Poland’s Klodzko region particularly hard-hit, prompting helicopter rescues. Scientists link this extreme weather to climate change, with a hotter atmosphere causing more intense rainfall.
