In Tamil Nadu, India, the death toll from consuming methanol-tainted liquor has risen to 51 as of Friday. Over 150 people have been treated for symptoms such as vomiting, stomach aches, and diarrhea since Wednesday after drinking the contaminated alcohol in Kallakurichi district, located about 250 kilometers from Chennai. Authorities have arrested four individuals involved in the illicit liquor trade and seized 200 liters of the tainted drink. Additionally, the state government has taken disciplinary action against ten officials for their failure to prevent the incident. Deaths from illegally produced alcohol, known as “hooch,” are common in India, where many people cannot afford branded spirits, prompting ongoing calls for a crackdown on illicit alcohol sales.
