Cyril Ramaphosa, leader of South Africa’s ANC, was reelected president by the National Assembly, receiving 283 votes against Julius Malema’s 44. In his address, Ramaphosa emphasized working together to meet the people’s needs, tackle poverty, unemployment, and inequality, and uphold constitutional democracy. The ANC and opposition DA agreed on a government of national unity. Ramaphosa will be sworn in on June 19. The ANC’s Thoko Didiza was elected speaker, and Annelie Lotriet of the DA as deputy speaker. In the recent elections, the ANC secured 159 of 400 seats, falling below the majority for the first time.
