Coventry takes office as new IOC president, succeeds Bach

Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe officially became the new President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday, making history as the first woman and the first African to lead the organization in its 130-year history.

A former Olympic swimmer with seven medals, including two golds, Coventry brings both athletic and political experience, having served as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport since 2019. She has held various leadership roles within the IOC, including chairing major Olympic Games coordination commissions.

She succeeds Thomas Bach, who concluded his 12-year term and was named Lifetime Honorary President for his contributions, including major reforms and support for host cities during his leadership. Coventry’s presidency begins with an eight-year term.
