Colombian President Gustavo Petro has declared a state of internal commotion in the Catatumbo region due to a humanitarian crisis caused by recent National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla attacks, which resulted in at least 80 deaths and displaced 11,000 people. Petro criticized the ELN for being increasingly influenced by drug trafficking and paramilitary culture.
The armed forces are actively working to rescue civilians, including peace signatories and their families, in affected municipalities. The Ombudsman’s Office urged the ELN and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia dissidents to allow humanitarian corridors to aid vulnerable communities and recover bodies for identification.
