Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive rescue and relief efforts following a section of an expressway collapse in Guangdong Province. Zhang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, led officials to oversee emergency response work in Meizhou city. He stressed timely rescue operations and minimizing disabilities caused by injuries. Zhang highlighted the importance of repairing damaged roads and restoring traffic order swiftly, while also emphasizing the need for transparent communication with the public. Additionally, he emphasized learning from the incident to enhance disaster prevention and response capabilities, ensuring the safety of people’s lives and property. Zhang also called for close monitoring of weather conditions during the flood season and strengthening early warning systems to mitigate disaster risks.
