Military officials from China and the United States held talks in Hawaii from May 28 to 29 under the framework of the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement, according to China’s People’s Liberation Army.
Both sides discussed air and maritime safety, reviewed how existing rules have been implemented, and explored ways to reduce risks of miscommunication between the two militaries.
The PLA said the meeting was candid and constructive, and emphasized that better communication can help prevent misunderstandings and improve operational safety at sea and in the air.
China also reiterated its opposition to what it described as actions that undermine its sovereignty under the pretext of freedom of navigation, while reaffirming its commitment to regional stability.
