Chinese State Councilor Shen Yiqin attended the opening ceremony of the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics on Friday in Milan at the invitation of the Italian side.
Ahead of the ceremony, Shen met Italian President Sergio Mattarella, conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping, and expressed best wishes for the success of the Games. Mattarella asked Shen to relay his greetings to President Xi and voiced hopes for strong performances by Chinese athletes, while thanking China for its support for Italy’s hosting of the Olympics.
During her visit, Shen also met with International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry, expressing China’s willingness to deepen cooperation with the IOC and promote global peace through sports. Coventry thanked China for its support of the Olympic movement and called for continued close cooperation.
Shen visited the Chinese Olympic delegation, encouraging athletes to compete with determination and honor the country, and also toured the China House and attended a figure skating event.
