Chinese scientists develop smart surveillance system to control mosquito-borne diseases

Chinese scientists led by Professor Chen Xiaoguang at Southern Medical University have developed an intelligent mosquito surveillance system to better prevent mosquito-borne diseases like chikungunya. Deployed in communities across Guangdong Province, the system improves on traditional methods by combining dual devices that monitor both non-blood-fed and blood-fed mosquitoes in real time.

Using human-mimicking attractants and smart oviposition traps, the system achieves four times the efficiency of conventional traps. Field tests showed it could quickly detect mosquito density surges and prompt timely intervention, resulting in nearly a 40% reduction in adult mosquito captures. The cloud-based alerts have sped up local disinfection efforts, marking a significant step forward in disease control technology.
