Chinese scientists develop safer, flexible organic lithium battery

Scientists from Tianjin University and South China University of Technology have created a new organic lithium-ion battery that is safer, more flexible, and more efficient than current designs. The research, published in Nature, was led by professor Xu Yunhua.

The team developed a new organic cathode material that improves energy density and charging speed, solving major problems that have limited organic batteries. Unlike conventional batteries that rely on metals such as cobalt and nickel, the new design uses an organic polymer called PBFDO, which allows faster ion movement and better energy storage.

Tests showed the battery can exceed 250 watt-hours per kilogram, outperforming standard lithium iron phosphate batteries. It also remained stable in temperatures from −70°C to 80°C, kept full capacity after bending or compression, and passed safety puncture tests.

Researchers say the technology could be useful for flexible electronics, wearable devices, and lightweight energy systems. The team is now working to scale up production and plans to build a pilot manufacturing line.
