Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday for a state visit to the United States, running from September 23 to 25 at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were welcomed by Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, at Joint Base Andrews in a rare planeside welcome ceremony that included a gun salute and the national anthems of both countries.
In a written speech, Xi said China and the United States should be partners rather than rivals and that the two countries’ development goals can complement each other. He called for both sides to work toward a stable relationship based mainly on cooperation, while managing competition and differences. Xi also said he looked forward to discussing major bilateral and international issues with Trump and hoped the visit would strengthen strategic stability and friendship between the two countries.
