Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Beijing on Tuesday, with both leaders pledging to deepen cooperation and strengthen their long-standing “pauk-phaw” friendship.
Xi said China places great importance on relations with Myanmar and supports the country’s efforts to pursue a development path suited to its national conditions. He reaffirmed China’s policy of non-interference in Myanmar’s internal affairs and its support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Chinese president said the two countries should work together to build a China-Myanmar community with a shared future, expand cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and steadily advance key projects under the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor. He also pledged greater support for Myanmar’s post-earthquake reconstruction and called for stronger cooperation against online gambling, telecom fraud and drug trafficking.
Min Aung Hlaing thanked China for its long-term support and reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to the one-China principle. He said Myanmar hopes to deepen cooperation in trade, investment and infrastructure, while ensuring the safety of Chinese businesses and personnel in the country.
Following the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of several cooperation agreements covering areas including transportation and public welfare.
