China has proposed establishing a new global artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation organization, with its headquarters potentially located in Shanghai. This initiative, announced on Saturday, highlights China’s commitment to global cooperation and aims to address the growing need for international governance in AI.
The proposed organization is intended to be a platform for fostering practical collaboration, sharing AI’s benefits equitably, especially with developing countries, and supporting the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. China hopes it will help coordinate development strategies, governance rules, and technical standards among member states.
By leveraging Shanghai’s strong lead in AI development, China believes the organization can help build international consensus and ensure AI truly benefits all of humanity. The move also responds to calls from countries in the “Global South” to bridge the digital and intelligence divide and promote ethical and inclusive AI development.
