Chinese FM: Supporting ‘Taiwan secession’ violates China’s constitution, international law

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that any attempt to support “Taiwan secession” is interference in China’s internal affairs and violates both China’s constitution and international law. Speaking in Beijing with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Wang detailed the historical and legal basis for China’s claim over Taiwan, citing the Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Proclamation, Japan’s 1945 surrender, and the 1971 UN Resolution that recognized the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China.

Wang said Taiwan’s status as part of China is firmly established and cannot be changed. He criticized recent comments by Japan’s leader about Taiwan, saying they violate past commitments, undermine the post–World War II order, and pose risks to regional peace. He added that Japan, as a defeated nation in WWII, should act with caution and avoid provoking tensions. Wang stressed that China and the international community must work to prevent any resurgence of Japanese militarism.
