Chinese EV makers reached a record milestone in Europe last month, with their share of the European electric vehicle market surpassing 15% for the first time despite EU import tariffs.
Sales of fully electric vehicles from companies such as BYD and Chery more than doubled year-on-year in April to over 38,000 units, according to Dataforce. Chinese brands now make up nearly 10% of Europe’s total car market and almost 29% of plug-in hybrid sales.
Chinese automakers are expanding rapidly in Europe through competitive pricing, advanced technology and growing local production partnerships. Some companies are building factories in Europe, while others are cooperating with European firms like Stellantis.
Industry observers and consumers have also noted major improvements in the quality of Chinese EVs. Surveys show rising interest among European buyers, while owners praised features such as quiet driving, user-friendly technology and reliable charging performance.
