The Chinese Embassy in Zambia donated approximately $500,000 to aid the Zambian government in its efforts to combat cholera. This contribution is part of the assistance measures previously announced by the embassy during the peak of the cholera outbreak in January. Wang Sheng, charge d’affaires at the Chinese embassy, expressed satisfaction at the alleviation of the cholera outbreak but emphasized the importance of sustained efforts for its eradication. The funds are intended to support sanitation and water supply improvements to prevent future outbreaks. Additionally, discussions are underway for a Chinese vaccine manufacturer to produce vaccines in Zambia as a long-term preventive measure against cholera. Zambian Minister of Finance and National Planning Situmbeko Musokotwane expressed gratitude for China’s support, attributing the success in controlling the outbreak to both the Zambian government’s determination and the assistance from partners like China. China has pledged continued assistance to Zambia, including during the country’s struggle with prolonged drought, which led to a national state of disaster being declared in late February due to threats to food security and electricity shortages.
