Chinese-developed AI models have surpassed U.S. counterparts in global token usage for the first time, according to data from OpenRouter. MiniMax’s M2.5 model leads with about 1.7 trillion weekly tokens processed, followed by Google’s Gemini 3 Flash Preview at roughly 997 billion and China’s DeepSeek V3.2 at around 798 billion. Moonshot AI’s Kimi K2.5 and Zhipu AI’s GLM-5 also rank among the top models, each exceeding 600 billion tokens in weekly usage.
Earlier data cited by National Business Daily showed Chinese models reaching a combined 5.16 trillion tokens, compared with about 2.7 trillion for U.S. models. Token consumption is seen as a key measure of real-world deployment, highlighting intensifying global competition in AI as developers focus on large-scale adoption and efficiency.
