China’s rail system has recorded 258 million passenger trips so far during this year’s Spring Festival travel period, according to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd..
On February 21, the 20th day of the travel rush, about 17.19 million trips were made. The company expected around 17.93 million trips the next day and added 2,203 extra trains to handle demand.
Officials have increased train capacity on busy routes, improved station and onboard services, and taken steps to make travel smoother.
The Spring Festival, also called Chinese New Year, fell on February 17 this year. The 40-day travel season, known as chunyun and often described as the world’s largest yearly migration, runs from February 2 to March 13.
