China’s railway network recorded more than 117 million passenger trips during the May Day holiday travel rush as of Monday, highlighting another major domestic travel surge.
According to China State Railway Group, the country’s rail system has operated safely and smoothly throughout the five-day holiday period, which ends Tuesday. On Monday alone, railways carried over 20.38 million passengers.
With return travel expected to peak at the end of the holiday, authorities projected around 23 million passenger trips for Tuesday and arranged 2,225 additional train services to handle the heavy demand.
Ticketing data from China’s official railway booking platform showed the most popular destinations on Tuesday were Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Shenzhen.
To manage the return-trip rush, railway authorities increased transport capacity nationwide. In Guangdong Province alone, 707 extra trains were added on high-demand routes to help ensure smoother and safer passenger flow.
