China’s gaming industry driving digital cultural exchange

China’s growing influence in the global gaming industry—especially through the mobile game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB)—illustrates how games are becoming platforms for cultural exchange and connection. Developed by Chinese studio Moonton Games, MLBB is designed to run on low- to mid-range smartphones, making it accessible to millions in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

The game’s popularity is reflected in its 37.6 million monthly users and record-breaking esports viewership. Events like the 2024 MLBB World Championship drew over 4.1 million peak viewers, while regional leagues maintain large, loyal fanbases.

MLBB fosters emotional and cultural resonance through relatable heroes, inclusive design, and storytelling. Players like the Philippines’ Bennyqt and Brazil’s Lunna have become icons whose personal stories connect deeply with fans. Moonton also collaborates with local creators—such as introducing Indonesian mythological hero Gatotkaca—to ensure cultural authenticity.

China’s strategic use of gaming for global engagement reflects a shift from top-down narratives to shared, digital experiences. Through esports and culturally integrated games, China is forging international ties and helping shape a more connected global gaming community.
