China’s Chang’e‑6 samples unlock deep insights into moon’s far side evolution

China’s Chang’e-6 mission has revealed major scientific breakthroughs from the first-ever samples collected from the far side of the moon. Researchers discovered ancient volcanic activity, evidence of a fluctuating magnetic field, and major differences in water content and chemical composition between the moon’s near and far sides.

The samples, taken from the South Pole–Aitken Basin, show the far side had volcanic activity up to 4.2 billion years ago and that its mantle is much drier and more chemically depleted. These findings offer the first direct insight into the moon’s deep interior and challenge many long-held theories about lunar evolution.
