China’s booming film and live performance markets fuel spending

China’s film and live performance markets are driving significant growth across the broader consumer economy, with the 2026 summer box office surpassing 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) by August 16, fueled by hits like Once Upon a Time in the Middle East and boosting more than 20 film-related stocks. This theatrical boom is supported by an expanding nationwide infrastructure that added 363 cinemas and 2,215 screens by July, contributing to a film industry value chain exceeding 380 billion yuan with a massive output multiplier effect. Simultaneously, live performances such as concerts and music festivals are thriving, having drawn nearly 98.8 million viewers and generated 30.4 billion yuan in ticket sales in the first half of the year, while sporting an economic consumption multiplier of 6.85. Innovations like dedicated concert train services and regional touring productions are further extending these cultural benefits beyond major cities, transforming China’s entertainment sector into a vital engine for urban vitality and integrated tourism and consumer spending.
