Chinese tech giant Baidu plans to launch its Apollo Go robotaxis on Lyft in Germany and the UK by 2026, pending regulatory approval. This move follows Baidu’s recent agreement with Uber to expand into Asia and the Middle East. Baidu and Lyft aim to grow the driverless fleet to thousands of vehicles across Europe, though no timeline or additional countries were named.
Driverless taxis are already operating in parts of China (e.g., Wuhan, Shanghai) and the US. Chinese companies are heavily investing in autonomous driving, with rivals like WeRide and Pony.AI also expanding internationally. WeRide is active in the Gulf and Switzerland, while Pony.AI is launching in the Middle East via Uber.
Separately, Lyft is expanding its European presence after acquiring German taxi app Freenow in April.
