China willing to work with Canada to foster new growth drivers, Premier Li says

Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held high-level talks in Beijing on Thursday, signaling a significant turnaround and stabilization in the China-Canada relationship. Both leaders expressed a commitment to upholding their strategic partnership and expanding practical cooperation across a wide range of emerging and traditional sectors.

Premier Li emphasized that China is ready to align development strategies with Canada, specifically highlighting cooperation in clean energy, digital technology, modern agriculture, and advanced manufacturing. He called for a fair business environment for Chinese firms in Canada and welcomed increased Canadian investment, noting that the two economies possess strong “complementarity” and vast potential for mutual growth.

For his part, Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed Canada’s adherence to the one-China policy and expressed a desire to leverage the unique advantages of both nations. Following their meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation agreements spanning trade, energy, and public security. Both sides also pledged to uphold multilateralism through frameworks like the United Nations and the WTO, while facilitating increased people-to-people exchanges in education and tourism.
