China’s National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center has warned that a super El Niño is likely to develop this autumn and winter and could surpass the record-breaking 1997–1998 event.
The forecast is based on ocean monitoring data and multiple climate models, which show rapidly rising sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific. The region officially entered an El Niño state in May, with warming accelerating in recent weeks.
The center said the event could have significant and long-lasting impacts on China’s climate and marine environment, urging authorities to prepare early for potential climate-related and marine disaster risks.
