China’s Coast Guard on Thursday called on the Philippines to stop what it described as infringements and provocations near Ren’ai Jiao in the South China Sea. China Coast Guard spokesperson Jiang Lue said a Philippine Coast Guard vessel had arrived to evacuate an injured person from a vessel grounded in the area.
Jiang said China allowed the transfer on humanitarian grounds and provided necessary assistance in accordance with the law. He also accused the Philippine side of misrepresenting the incident and misleading the public. China maintains that it has sovereignty over the Nansha Qundao, including Ren’ai Jiao, and the surrounding waters.
