Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi in Beijing during Orsi’s state visit, with both leaders agreeing to deepen cooperation and strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership. Marking 38 years of diplomatic relations, they pledged to expand collaboration in key sectors including trade, investment, agriculture, infrastructure, technology, and emerging areas such as green development and digital economy. Orsi described China as Uruguay’s key strategic partner and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
Economic relations between the two countries have grown significantly, with China remaining Uruguay’s largest trading partner for over a decade and bilateral trade reaching $6.59 billion in 2024. The partnership has expanded beyond agricultural exports to include sectors such as new energy vehicles and innovation. The two sides also signed more than 10 cooperation agreements and emphasized the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
The leaders also discussed global cooperation, as Uruguay currently chairs several major regional and international organizations. China expressed support for Uruguay’s leadership roles and pledged to work together to promote multilateralism, regional integration, and stronger relations between China and Latin American and Caribbean countries.
